we even had a spot or two of drizzle. partly sunny this afternoon. again temperatures rising into the mid-70s with a south wind at 10 to 15. big time showers and storms well to the west this morning. that front is going to be in the neighborhood tomorrow with a few showers here and there. but this morning we still have that push off the atlantic with the southeasterly flow. so we're kind of socked in with the clouds now. rain in the caroline fast. your temps are in the -- carolinas. your temps are in the 50s. 55 cumberland. and 57 in fredricksburg. monika samtani, here we are at 5:00 straight up. how is it looking so far? >> very light, very good. no issues on our interstates, the beltway looks good all around town as well. metro should be opening right about now. they were scheduled to open at 5:00 a.m. as usual this morning. and if you are planning to use metro down to the emancipation day parade at freedom plaza. go ahead and get off at federal

triangle or metro center. 395 at the 14th street bridge, no issues to report here as you head into the downtown area. all of the potomac and anacostia river crossings are just fine. maryland side, 270 southbound very light. no issues at father hurley boulevard heading down to the point where the lanes divide. you're going to be just fine. no issues on 355, great seneca highway or the beltway through bethesda. this morning doctors are trying to prevent any rise in the death toll from yesterday's boston marathon bombings. >> as the race clock ticked past the 4:00 hour mark, a bomb exploded right why the spectators were standing right near the finish line. as people started to run away from the first explosion, a second blast went off about 14 seconds later. the finish line was cordoned

off as rescuers flooded on to the streets to try to help the people who were wounded. >> here's what we know at this hour. the twin blasts killed three people, including an 8-year-old boy. more than 140 people have been injured, the most serious have severed limbs. boston's wbztv reports police searched an apartment in the suburb of revere last night as part of its investigation. delia goncalves is following these developments from our satellite center. delia, what more have you heard? >> reporter: we can tell you in regard to that apartment in revere that f.b.i., police, and other federal agents raided that home, but we still don't know the connection. of course as with everything involved in this investigation, details are still sketchy and still fluid, very unfoaldzing at this hour. the blasts have shaken bostonians and many around the world. most major cities including the district are now on heightened alert. cbs is reporting several other bombs have been identified throughout the city, but thankfully they did not

detonate. police stress they do not have any suspects in custody but are questioning, quote, many people. we are hearing there is surveillance video showing a man with what appears to be to backpacks in the boylston street area just moments before the explosions. >> police and medical personnel from across the region have sent dozens, maybe even hundreds of volunteers to help us here in boston. that's what americans do in times of crisis. we come together and we help one another. moments like these terrible as they are don't show our weakness. they show our strength. >> we still do not know who did this or why and people shouldn't jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. but make no mistake. we will get to the bottom of this. >> and of course we all know the panic that ensued after those two bombings in the

boylston street area just moments after the race. and many people cross that finish line. several runners did leave their bags and other items in the area as they were fleeing that area you can imagine. all of those items now part of the expansive crime scene in downtown boston. much more on the investigation and more, a breakdown on the physically injured coming up at 5:30. mike, andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves with that update from our satellite center. the 2013 boston marathon was already paying tribute to the victims from another nearby tragedy when the explosions went off. the final mile, mile 26, was dedicated to the victims of the sandy hook shooting in newtown, connecticut. >> 26 is the total number of children and adults killed back there in december. if you look at mile marker 26, it's got newtown's logo on it. several families from newtown were in the stands among the spectators and as if they haven't dealt with enough, they

had to witness this terrorist attack. >> the blast came just after the four-hour mark in the race. the elite racers were long gone but a handful of runners were at the finish line. >> more than a thousand runners from the d.c. area alone ran in the marathon this year. they're now trying to make their way home. jessica doyle is live at reagan national airport this morning as we wait for more of them to arrive, jess? >> reporter: thanks so much, mike. good morning you to, andrea. good morning to everybody at hope. you can only imagine what it must have been like to be on the scene when those two explosions went off and in the aftermath, the raw emotions that those runners were feeling, the friends and family who had surrounded them for their triumph fans day. -- triumphant day. a large presence is registered for the race in boston. let me throw some numbers at you. 450 people from maryland, 170 people from d.c., 650 people from the northern virginia area, all running yesterday, all training for months for

that triumphant day. instead they were greeted by horror and our ken molestina was here at reagan national last night. he was able to talk to some of the people who were getting off the planes from boston, the shunts coming here back to reagan to bring people home. they shared their horrifying experiences. >> it was loud and all of a sudden you heard the two explosions and it got silent. so, you know, people were looking around. nobody knew what was going on. next thing you know, there was emergency response going by. >> the explosion came up over their heads and threw them. it was just amazing to know that that was an explosion. you're looking at the aftermath of it that close. >> reporter: you can only imagine what it was like to be there, the runners putting all that time, all that training into a day that should have been triumphant, gathering their friends and family around them into a day that turned into a national tragedy. we're going to be live here at

go about your day as planned. if that means also including the emancipation day event. the flags at the u.s. capitol flying at half staff in light of the tragedy. if you look on the end of this parade route already on pennsylvania avenue, you can see there is a police presence. that is planned but there is going to be some extra security. in a press conference yesterday, d.c.'s police chief detailed a little bit of that saying that some of the presence you'll see, some of the presence you won't necessarily. they want to encourage you to take public transportation. they want you to feel safe. they say they have a plan to do so. and they also want to send a message out there that if you see something, say something. >> we would do that any time there's an incident anywhere nationally or internationally until we have enough information to feel comfortable there's no potential connection to washington, d.c. or threat to washington, d.c. will you see visible increase in presence. there are some other activities we are involved in and i won't

don't think we'll see too much in the way of precip today. cold air is in place out west out in denver and casper. parts of wipe weil are expecting -- parts of wyoming are expecting 1 to 2 feet of snow from the latest system. the jet stream dipping way down in the southwest coming across the rockies and right here, right across from st. louis toward chicago, been strong to even severe thunderstorms across missouri this morning. the cold air in nebraska back toward colorado and wyoming. the snow is falling. the rockies and mets were snowed out yesterday up at the mile high city. coors field there. we have some showers coming on shore from the east into eastern north carolina with just again the clouds that are stuck over us. but i do think as we get into the afternoon and this is really -- we get into the afternoon, we'll break out into some sunshine and tonight watch north and west. there will be a chance for a couple of showers late tonight coming through the region. that front nearby tomorrow with a shower or two. so the forecast today, 76,

from route 644. there are no issues on the beltway between tysons, springfield and alexandria. a live look on the other side of town. no issues here on the beltway in college park. we'll end with a live look northbound georgia avenue at university boulevard. utility work in place this morning. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. as you might imagine, police are sifting through a lot of clues trying to find out who is responsible for the bombings at the boston marathon. >> crowds were cheering on runners crossing the finish line when two explosions shattered the festive atmosphere. competitors and spectators started running for their lives as police and rescuers near the finish line called in a swarm of emergency vehicles to help the wounded. >> this is what we know so far. three people are dead, the youngest an 8-year-old boy. doctors are treating most of the seriously injured of the blast victims, many of them suffered amputations. in all more than 140 people are

injured. the two bombs exploded inside trash cans. cbs news is now reporting that to unexploded devices were recovered and they're still intact. delia goncalves is live in our satellite center following the latest. >> reporter: a bit more on the injured now and those who did not survive. sadly we now know that 8 earld boy was just -- 8-year-old boy was just waiting to congratulate his father as he crossed the finish line. it is awful and very hard to take. his mother and sister were injured but survived the blast. doctors say many injuries were so severe, amputations were necessary. those folks will require, quote, serial operations in the coming days. as devastating as the injuries are, they all could have been much worse and the death toll larger had boston emergency responders not acted so quickly. many hospitals already at full staff as workers prepared to treat runners suffering from heat exhaustion and the like. and the medical tents at the marathon site serve as an

immediate triage for the wounded, for those living with the emotional wounds, city officials are now offering assurances. >> i'd like to offer my sympathies to the victims and the families of this horrendous event. this cowardly act will not be taken in stride. we will turn every rock over to find the people who are responsible for this. >> people should expect, those who are riding the t that there will be random checks of backpacks and other parcels, and we just ask everyone to be patient with that inconvenience for the time being. it is for the public's safety. >> reporter: police go on to tell us that they do not have any suspects so far, but they are questioning, quote, many people. mike, andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves live in the satellite center this morning. thanks, delia. nearly 1300 runners from around here from this region signed up to run the 2013

boston marathon. >> according to the marathon's website, 452 runners were from maryland, 171 from the district and 654 came from virginia. we've not learned whether any of them or their friends or relatives in the crowd are among the injured. some runners have already flown back to d.c. others are on their way. jessica doyle is at national airport with that part of the story. good morning, jess. >> reporter: good morning to you. good morning to everybody watching at home. i want to tell you obviously in the wake of what happened in boston yesterday, security concerns are heightened. as a result they've raised the security level at reagan national airport yesterday and that may continue through today. i can tell you i did see a bomb- sniffing dog here earlier this morning. we saw other signs of security possibly being heightened here at reagan national. we don't expect the first group of runners from boston to return here to the airport until about 7:30 this morning. that's when the first shuttle comes in from boston returning

to reagan national airport. as you said, a big presence of washingtonians at boston running the marathon yesterday. they started coming home yesterday. we caught up with some of them last night as they returned to reagan national airport. and they talked about the chaos that ensued immediately after the bombings. >> i was in the hotel room. my friends started calling me, everyone from all over the country was like, are you okay? are you okay? >> i was around the corner when it happened. it was frightening because there was a lot of chaos. nobody could find each other. you know, you couldn't find your person. it was scary. >> reporter: an immediate concern for a lot of folks was to reestablish connections with their loved ones who were there also at the boston marathon. that of course was difficult since cell phone service was very spotty for an hour or two immediately after the event

happened. social media definitely came into play. a lot of people were able to track runners based on gps positioning. that became a really big deal yesterday as well as being able to read people's tweets to know they were okay or see updates on social media. we're going to stay live at reagan national airport. 7:30 when the flight comes n we'll try to talk to folks to find out their stories, how they're doing, how they're feeling, of course a lot of raw emotions in the wake of what happened in boston yesterday. i'm jessica doyle and back you to in the studio. >> jessica, thank you. these boston explosions led to a quick response from several area law enforcement agencies. >> we'll have more on the increased security measures now in place around our

enjoy it. already this morning we can see some increased police presence at the parade route on 14th and pennsylvania avenue. we know there's an event that's going to start in a couple of hours across at the willard hotel here in downtown d.c. the d.c. police chief addressed media yesterday saying there is a plan in place. there is no connection to the boston marathon incident to d.c. they say they have the partnership and the resources with area police officers to make sure that everyone feels safe. they want to reassure people and remind people that if you see something suspicious, to alert them. >> come down and enjoy the event. we have a very strong security plan in place. we are the nation's capitol so we do that on a regular basis. we will have enhanced security that probably some will, some will not be visible to the people who come down but i want people to feel comfortable to take public transportation, come down to the event and enjoy yourself. we feel comfortable it's going to be a safe event.

inside a townhouse in germantown. montgomery county police say 31- year-old adam arndt killed miller before taking his own life. he was an army recruiter. miller had signed up to become an army reservist after graduation and family members say miller was trying to prevent arndt from committing suicide. a teenager struck by a hit and-run driver died on monday according to anne arundel county police. the person was hit friday near alvin road along with a 13-year- old girl who survived. investigators describe the vehicle as an suv 1997 through 2002 ford expedition they believe with damage to the passenger side headlight. the hood and passenger side front quarter panel. continuing our conversation on the explosions at the boston marathon, i'm joined now by security expert ed clark who's been sharing his insights with us since the explosions

yesterday. good to have you back here. some of the latest information, we've heard about an unexploded bomb found at the scene and heard about two more unexploded bombs. what have you heard the latest and what information could we glean from this unexploded devices? >> if they recover the unexploded devices, this he can do a forensic analysis between that devase and the two that detonated. it allows investigators to draw a link in analysis. >> get a signature of who the bomber is. >> absolutely correct. >> in the past we had you on to talk about incidents like this around the world and in the u.s. we talk about chatter and the chatter that goes on before, during and after and we've not been hearing any of that chatter. the only thing we've heard so far is the pakistani taliban saying we didn't do it. what concerns do you have that we haven't heard chatter and who might be the bombers? >> it might lead us to believe it's more of an inside, silent

sleeper cell or what they call a lone wolf which is more challenging for investigators to sort of identify who may be responsible for this act of terrorism. >> you said yesterday on our news that you didn't believe the bombers were trying to target the runners, that they were after the spectators. why do you believe that and why is that important? >> i think it was the significance of the event, a big event in boston, where the bomb originated from, they couldn't get to the front line where the runners were so they intended to cause as much damage as they could to the spectators and onlookers. >> trying to follow every lead, how important are all of the cameras, either the cell phone cameras from the spectators, the runners, atms, just city cameras in finding a suspect? >> it's one facet of the investigation where they can go the cameras and review frame by fraip. for anyone out there who has any pictures or photographs that may be relevant to turn

those to authorities, a critical piece of information. >> in fact video is what led police to this home in revere. they saw a driver going back and forth and they followed him there. what could they be looking for at that home is. >> certainly any evidence of bomb-making devices, any intelligence, just anything that they can gather that will lead them in the furtherance of identifying the perp rater in this crime -- perpetrator in this crime. >> we larry around the world and the cities, we have the emancipation day parade. security measures are being reinvestigated. the thatcher funeral tomorrow, the london marathon on sunday. what worries you the most going forward as far as incidents like this? and how can we prevent them? >> just the uncertainty, whether it is an organized group, a lone wolf or a combination thereof. i think for everyone out there, just be aware of your surroundings. if you see something that appears to be suspicious, pause and call 911 and just share that information. and try to be proactive in what

5:57. a gorgeous sky over d.c. this morning. check out this picture as we look north back toward the capitol, washington monument on the left and the broken clouds out there. going to be a nice day. we'll get rid of some of these clouds, more sunshine. 72 by 1:00 with a high this afternoon in the mid-70s. i hope you can take advantage and enjoy it. monika? no, mike and andrea, sorry. the boston marathon got its start in 1897. it was inspired by the success of the first modern day marathon held a year earlier in the summer olympics. the race draws about 27,000 runners, half a million spectators every year. and as we watch a lot of these events unfold, this is especially personal for a lot of us because i ran the race in 2005. i lived a block from the race route. my wife produced the boston marathon live television coverage for ten years. so we're intimately involved in the race. one of the things that strikes me most is the greatness of this race is about the people that surround it. you have ten deep from

hopkinton, 26.2 miles. there are people cheering you on trying to test your body. you don't know if you're going to make it. they say yes, you are going to make it. you're filled with goose bumps and exultation when you're trying to pull off something you don't think is possible. that's what this tragedy is about, so many spectators were there, ten deep. thankfully the race was near the end so there weren't so many on the sides at the finish line. a little boy who's 8 years old, to cheer on his dad should not die because of a coward. this is ridiculous. the marathon community is going to stay together. this is probably going to be the most well attended marathon as they move to the 118th next year. security measures are probably going to have to be clamped down, especially near the finish line. andrea and i also talked about the garbage cans. a lot of major cities take them away. in d.c. you see them gone. >> moving forward, maybe that's what's going to happen we hope. some of the other impressions

we are concerned about is just making sure this is an event for the people. it's a historic event, one of the races that marathoners gauge their running careers by. >> you were certain that runners would be back. as we were finishing our interview, i asked ed clark after it, would he have can selled the emancipation day parade. he said no way, you can't let these people win. you have to show your strength and that's the boston marathon's hallmark, showing your personal strength and strength of the community that supports runners like mike through this race of 26.2 miles. >> that was evidenced when they raced to help regular people helping other people to get through this. d.c. knows how to take care ever its people. go down to see the parade because it's worth it. >> it is emancipation day in the district. i'm andrea roane. thank you for waking up with us, just about 6:00 a.m. i'm mike hydeck. here's the lovely monika samtani. traffic moment tairm.
